Reidar Opem - Trip Report

Diving at Buyat proved to be fantastic. Before lunch i used my wide angle lens around the pristine corals and after lunch i changed to macro lens for hunting the critters. The night dives proved to be the best i have ever experienced. I could observe a pygmy squid hunting a tiny rock pool shrimp (Palaemon serenus) in the beam of my torch. Later we found a bobtail squid and i shot it together with my index finger to document the scale. The bobtail squid is really tiny, it covers half of my fingernail.  I saw my first basket star. This is really something different, it looks like a small tree but it walks on the bottom and hunts small animals with it´s arms. It could be a star in a horror movie. I was so lucky to find a tiny shrimp (Periclemes lanipes), a small red shrimp which is specialized to live on the Basket star.My special interest in pygmy seahorses was rewarded when we found Hippocampus bargibanti in an yellow version and a Hippocampus Denise in an orange version.  I changed lenses and returned with a 60mm macro + 2x teleconverter + 25mm extension tube. This made it possible to shoot with a 3,5:1 magnification. After some trial and failure i had a picture of the head of the Hippocampus Denise :-) .Of course i almost forgot the encounter with a mimic octopus. The combination of wide angle possibilities and critter hunting with the macro lens made this destination a perfect place for an underwater photographer.Of course you don´t have to bring a camera. With the competent and professional guiding from critters@lembeh my week at Buyat is a week i will never forget.
